First cookies I have ever made. Seriously.

Well, last night I set out on a new journey in my life. It was pretty daunting and scary: I made cookies. I really should have documented the entire ordeal because, let me tell you, it was ever definition of the word ordeal.

It all started when I volunteered to bake something for the
Colleges Against Cancer breast cancer awareness bake sale at my school. Why did I do this? I have no idea. As this blog is definitely going to chronicle, I have huge ambitions and optimism but very little skill (aka, I have no idea what I’m doing).

My grand vision included some fall shaped Wilton cookie cutters I had recently bought at Ross. In my vision, I imaged gorgeous cookies, smothered in pink icing and tasteful amount of sprinkles. People flocked to our table to buy the cookies and demanded I sign the bag in which they were kept.

Well, after cutting the cookies into shapes and baking them, they turned out to be big. massive. blobs. of. cookie. It was horrible. I wish I had taken a photo of this disaster but this similar outcome will have to suffice:

Mine looked more like the Michelin Man...and less fetus-y

Giving up on this, my mom suggested I just make some general round cookies. Defeated, I agreed and made about 12 round cookies and snuck in three heart cut outs (which turned out without resembling a tire spokesman, thank God.)

Then came the icing. I used this recipe, from

  • 1 cup confectioners’ sugar
  • 2 teaspoons milk
  • 2 teaspoons light corn syrup
  • 1/4 teaspoon almond extract
  • assorted food coloring

  1. In a small bowl, stir together confectioners’ sugar and milk until smooth. Beat in corn syrup and almond extract until icing is smooth and glossy. If icing is too thick, add more corn syrup.

I substituted vanilla for the almond which might have caused the later problem of…the stuff tasted horrible. But I trucked on because, who cares. The people won’t know they taste bad until after they’ve purchased them. Win/win for breast cancer research!

I was extremely impressed with how the icing looked though! They looked like legit sugar cookies! Overall, I’m pretty proud with how my first attempt at cookies turned out. I obviously have a ton of room for improvement but hopefully that road will be fun.

And so, there is the story of my foray into the world of cookies. Somehow, I survived to dream another day.
